Season 2, Episode 35 of The Terrible Podcast is up and David Todd and I come at you smack dab in the middle of Patriots week. we actually open up by talking about the Ravens Jaguars game Monday night and how the Ratbirds do not look as scary right now as they did after beating the Steelers back in week 1.

We move on to discuss the injuries headed into the game and discuss a few things Mike Tomlin hit on during his press conference on Tuesday. we look back and give some closing thoughts on the game last week against the Cardinals and start discussing the New England Patriots game this coming Sunday. we hit on a few areas in a minor preview and will have our usually breakdown of the game on the Friday episode.

In part two we welcome Greg Bedard to the show. Bedard is one of the Patriots beat writers for the Boston Globe on Boston.com and he also covers the NFL as a whole. He has a long history of covering teams as he also has covered both the Dolphins and the Packers over the years in addition. we get into some great discussion about the Patriots offense and defense as it relates to the game this coming Sunday and Bedard does not disappoint with his great X’s & O’s talk as I ask him about the Steelers lack of success in blitzing Tom Brady. we talk about the importance of Wes Welker in this game as well as their fine pair of tight ends, Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez. If there is one thing we learned from Snoopy, World War I Flying Ace and his arch nemesis, Manfred von Richthofen, the Red Baron, it is that Dog Fights can be fun. sure, Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer made them cool in top Gun, but Charlie Brown’s pet beagle made Dog Fights famous (no pun intended). Ace Combat: Assault Horizon redesigns the treacherous lifestyle of combat pilots into a need for Speed experience. This game hides fast and furious pilot action behind a realistic call of Duty exterior. Assault Horizon is not really about the realism so much as it is about the thrill of getting inside the cockpit and being one bad you know what. While it may alienate hardcore Ace Combat and flight sim fans with its ease of gameplay, Assault Horizon will garner a broader fan base thanks to its loose controls and rewarding action.

The game begins with a lofty opening that feels ripped out of your favorite war movie (or one of the Modern Warfare 3 trailers – take your pick). You actually don’t realize that you’re in control of the aircraft, right away. The game is semi on rails.

As you take control of your jet, already in air, you are not worried about running out of bullets or missiles. This game is just about fast paced combat. Most of the time, when you are one of the jet boards, you will try to target one of the TGT_Lead Ace Pilots and then enter Dog Fight mode. Once you get close to a target, your reticle will turn red. Then, you will need to accelerate with the RT. when you do, your reticle will expand. This is your signal to press both the RB and LB at the same time on the Xbox 360. when you do, your jet will quickly lock into the jet in front of you.

Typically, you can destroy an Ace Pilot easily once you get into Dog Fight mode by firing a homing missile. There will be times when your enemy will shoot a flare into the air to trick your missile, but more often than not you’ll be able to make scrap metal out of those Aces. At other times, it just feels more satisfying to use your machine gun. but why go through that painstaking process when your missiles will cut the time in half. although the Dog Fights are relatively easy, the trick is getting into Dog Fight Mode. The Ace Pilots tend to fly low to ground so that they can trick you into crashing. It’s a healthy dose of adrenaline. You’ll find it hard not to move around in your seat as you react to your plane flying upside down and diving into all manner of desert or city terrain (Paris is nice to this time of year).

Another hindrance to entering Dog Fight mode is the constant warnings that a missile has locked on to you. Once this happens it is best to get out of Dog Fight mode and dodge the missile before proceeding. If a missile does hit you, have no fear. Your jet is armed with Star Wars’ R2-D2 who provides quick repairs. Okay, R2 is not really there. but, some how, your jet is able to self-repair itself. This is mock realism at its finest. The onboard droid also speaks, calling out “missile, missile” at every turn.

There are a few quicktime events to break up the action, usually when you need to eject. After the first quick time event, players get a quick cut scene then move on to a helicopter turret board. While the turret board feels like it was ripped out of another game, it does have a great cinematic quality to it. Credits appear as you take out RPGs. You can also press the LT button to zoom in to the terrain and see the detail in the landscape. It’s great to look at when you are not blowing up cars and anything else firing at your.

In general, the game is filled with great textures. You’ll see various buildings or oilrigs collapsing on you as your plane glides on rails through the falling debris. also, in between missions the cut scenes switch over to a first-person camera perspective. Sometimes you are allowed to use your RS to look around. it doesn’t feel tacked on. The game moves seamlessly between action and cut scenes. However, the story lacks any real intrigue. some of the boards are long and drawn out so that by the time you get to a cut scene you’ve forgotten that there was even a story going on.

The game also has helicopter missions which switch up the controls entirely from the jet missions. in helicopter mode, your buttons work more like a first-person shooter. Whether you are on a helicopter or jet mission, you’ll get your option to choose which kind of jet or helicopter you want to use. However, there’s really no explanation as to how one works better than the other. Choosing an average aircraft and utilizing homing missiles usually works almost every time.

I can’t say that I’m a fan of air combat games. After Burner was probably the last one I really I really enjoyed. Overtly realistic controls just got too “real” and excessively clunky. Much like Gran Turismo those realistic games appealed to a certain niche. Ace Combat: Assault Horizon goes with the need for Speed route of just giving gamers a fun action game in the sky. I can get down with that even though the purists may rebuke it.

October 26, 2011 (CHICAGO) (WLS) — once upon a time, there was no PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360. there were just pings that Pong-ed and Pac-Men eating up everything in sight.

Video games have been around for almost 40 years, and the Chicago store People Play Games celebrates the past with its retro systems.

“This is a video game store and we specialize mostly on the retro where we sell and buy all video game consoles and games,” Adam Rolnick, owner, People Play Games.

the store has thousands of games to go along with the many different video game systems. the games sell for an average of $10 while the systems go for $50 to $80.

“People are very nostalgic when they come in. People love going back to games they remember playing when they were kids. They’re a lot easier to play than the newer games are,” Rolnick said. There’s no doubt the games from the seventies and eighties were far less sophistated. But that doesn’t mean they were any less fun. It’s just that they were replaced by newer technology … But now the old games are ending up back here.

“Most of them come from people who sell to us. We will buy any video game system and accessory that people find in their basement and their attic.”

the consoles are cleaned up and put back in working order. so are the games, like Pongjust two paddles and an electronic bouncing ball with primitive sound effects. Compared to today’s technology, it’s not much  but Pong was the beginning.

“This was the baby of video games. it just exploded from there,” Rolnick.

Today the video game industry makes more money than the movie and music industries combined.

Been debating this for a while..

I don’t really want to keep my 360 anymore, actually the only reason I am keeping it is because of how great Gears of War 3′s multiplayer is. Thing is, I don’t want to keep paying for gold just to play one game.

I had my 360 for almost 4 years now, bought my PlayStation 3 January of this year and it’s library has surpass that of my 360 cause of all the exclusives it has now.

Now here is my biggest problem of why I can’t sell it. It’s because of Mass Effect 3.

Mass Effect has been the only series in this gen of consoles that I been overly obsessive with. I done EVERYTHING you can possibly think of, to unlocking all the achievements, to doing every single quest and having save files with every single predicament that the game has to offer.

I will hate myself forever, and Bioware, if this whole “Choices will matter” is one big load of horseshit. I forgave them with that crap they pulled on ME2(seriously, e-mails?) since 3 is supposed to tie them all together.

I really want this game to make things I done in the past matter.

I want to be like oh wow I remember that guy when I did this and that, and why are these people attacking me? oh right; I pissed them off in that side mission.

I feel like a moron for keeping my 360 when I could sell it to get Uncharted 3 or the other games that are going on crazy sales but my god am I passionate about this series.
